Internet Price Increase 2026: Every Provider That Raised Rates and What to Do About It

Sam Watanuki / Updated Jul 23, 2026 | Pub. Jul 20, 2026

If your internet bill went up in 2026 and nobody warned you, it’s not just a “you” thing.

The cable industry’s standard playbook is a 12-month promotional rate followed by a $20-$40 jump that lands on a bill most people don’t read closely. This year, several major providers piled a general rate increase on top of that promotional cliff, meaning plenty of households got hit twice. This is a living tracker of every confirmed internet price increase in 2026, why it happened, and what you can actually do about it.

Why Is My Internet Bill So High in 2026?

The short answer? The average American household now pays 81.16 a month for home internet, or roughly 973 a year, and about one in four people say they’re paying more than they were a year ago [1]. That number climbs for anyone still riding out a promotional rate that’s about to expire.

Two structural things are making it worse in 2026. First, the FCC’s “broadband nutrition label" rule (which forces providers to disclose post-promotional pricing at the point of sale) has been a win for transparency since it took effect in 2024, but the FCC proposed rolling back several of its requirements at the end of 2025, including itemized fee disclosures [2]. Weaker disclosure rules make it easier for a rate hike to slip past you.

Second, competition is shrinking. Charter Communications’ $34.5 billion acquisition of Cox Communications has already cleared the FCC and Department of Justice and is waiting only on California regulators before it closes, creating a combined company with more than 38 million subscribers across 41 states under the Spectrum brand [3]. Fewer competing internet providers in a given market historically means less pressure to keep prices down.

The 2026 Price Hike Tracker: Every Provider That Raised Rates

Provider What Went Up Amount Effective Date Why
Xfinity (Comcast) Broadcast TV Fee, Regional Sports Network Fee, StreamSaver add-on, post-promo internet rates Fees up several dollars/mo; StreamSaver 15 → 20–40/mo December 22, 2025 (StreamSaver); ongoing at promo expiration Rising programming costs; end of promotional terms
Spectrum (Charter) Standard internet rate once the 12-month promo ends 49.99 promo → $79.99–119.99/mo standard (up to a 60% jump) Ongoing; regional Gig-tier hikes around January 15, 2026 Promo expiration plus base-rate adjustments
Cox 500 Mbps and 1 Gig plans 500 Mbps: 80 → 95 → 100/mo Early 2026 General rate increase citing network investment
AT&T Fiber Standalone 1 GIG pricing (the exception, not the rule) +$15/mo standalone (offset if bundled with wireless) June 7, 2026 Plan restructuring; base fiber pricing otherwise flat since 2021

Xfinity price increase 2026: Comcast’s fee creep is the real story here. The Broadcast TV Fee and Regional Sports Network Fee sit outside your promotional or minimum-term pricing, so they can rise even while your “locked-in" rate stays the same, and Comcast has confirmed further increases are coming to keep pace with rising costs [4]. On the internet side, new customers can now lock a rate for five years, a move Comcast has framed as addressing rising costs and pricing transparency, which offers a longer runway than the old 12-month promo cliff. Existing customers without that lock are still exposed to the standard $20-$40 jump once their term ends.

Spectrum rate hike 2026: Spectrum’s pattern remains the most aggressive of the major cable providers. A $49.99 promotional rate commonly resets to $79.99 or higher after 12 months, and some markets saw an additional Gig-tier increase on top of that reset. Spectrum also introduced its own multi-year price guarantee for new customers, but current subscribers are the ones absorbing most of this year’s hikes.

Cox price increase: Cox’s 2026 increases were comparatively modest—$5 a month on its 500 Mbps and 1 Gig tiers—and the company still offers a two-year price lock for customers who negotiate one [5]. That relative restraint may not last once the Charter-Cox merger closes and Cox’s pricing structure folds into Spectrum’s.

AT&T Fiber, for contrast, raised its standalone 1 Gig price by $15 in June as part of a broader plan simplification, but otherwise kept fiber pricing flat for the fifth year running, which at least shows that not every internet provider raised rates the same way in 2026 [6].

How to Switch Internet Providers (or Fight Your Rate Hike)

You do have some leverage if you’re looking to make a switch, especially before your promotional period actually ends:

  • Check your bill and your broadband label first. The label your provider was required to show you at signup lists your standard rate. That’s the number your bill is about to become.
  • Call retention before you cancel. Tell the rep you’re comparing internet plans elsewhere; a new promotional rate or loyalty discount is often available for the asking.
  • Compare internet providers at your address. Coverage and pricing vary block by block, so run a fresh internet comparison rather than assuming your options haven’t changed.
  • Prioritize a price-locked plan. A multi-year price guarantee is worth more than a slightly lower introductory rate that resets in 12 months.
  • Don’t wait for the bill shock. If a rate hike is coming, decide before it lands whether negotiating or switching gets you a better deal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did my internet bill go up if I didn’t change my plan?

Even if your plan stayed the same, the underlying costs attached to it didn’t. Promotional pricing typically expires after 12 months, and separate fees (equipment rental, broadcast fees, regional sports fees) can increase independently of your locked-in rate.

How often do internet providers raise prices?

Most major cable providers adjust rates at least once a year, on top of whatever happens when your individual promotional period ends. Fiber providers like AT&T raise prices far less frequently.

Is it worth switching internet providers to avoid a price hike?

Usually, yes, if a comparable plan is available at your address. Even without switching, simply calling to compare offers gives you leverage to negotiate your current provider down.

How do I find the best internet provider in my area?

Use an internet comparison tool and enter your address, since availability, speed, and pricing all vary significantly by location. The “best" provider on a national list may not even serve your street.
