AT&T Is Shutting Off DSL For Good

Caroline Lefelhoc / Updated Aug 18, 2026 | Pub. Aug 18, 2026

If you still get your internet through an AT&T DSL line, you’re on the clock for being cut. AT&T is retiring its old copper network, and DSL is going away with it. You may have already gotten a notice in the mail, or you may be reading this because a neighbor mentioned theirs. Either way, the switch is coming, and now is the time to decide what replaces it. The good news is that your two main options, AT&T Fiber and AT&T Internet Air, are both faster than your current DSL. The trick is knowing which one you can get at your address and how much each one will cost. Let’s walk through it.

Why AT&T Is Pulling the Plug on DSL

AT&T stopped taking new DSL and copper phone orders back in October 2025, and in June 2026 it started physically dismantling copper equipment in roughly 500 wire centers across the country, about 10 percent of its footprint. The plan is to retire nearly all of its copper network by the end of 2029.

The reasoning is money and math. AT&T spends close to $6 billion a year keeping its aging copper lines alive, and fewer than 5 percent of its customers still use them. Federal regulators have made the exit easier too, rolling back old paperwork rules so carriers can shut down copper faster. That means the notice period can be short, sometimes as little as 90 days before service in your area ends for good.

Now, there is no single nationwide shut-off date. AT&T is doing this market by market, wire center by wire center. So your cousin two states away might lose DSL months before you do, or the reverse.

Let’s Find Out What You Can Get as a Replacement Connection

Before you compare plans (or additional providers), you need to know what AT&T can install at your home. Fiber and Internet Air are not available everywhere, and fiber, especially, can change from one block to the next. The same street can have fiber running to the houses on one end and nothing on the other.

AT&T Fiber now reaches about 21 states, and the company is expanding it fast. It passed 30 million homes and businesses in 2025 and aims to reach roughly 40 million by the end of 2026. So even if fiber hasn’t reached you yet, it may be closer than you think.

The only way to know for sure is to check your address here or call 1-833-887-3016.

AT&T Fiber vs. AT&T Internet Air

Say both options show up at your address. Which should you pick? For almost everyone, the answer is fiber.

AT&T Fiber runs an actual fiber-optic line to your home, so your upload speed matches your download speed. Symmetrical speeds are a big deal if you work from home, back up files to the cloud, or hop on a lot of video calls, because cable and wireless connections upload much slower than they download. As of June 2026, AT&T simplified fiber into four speed tiers: 300 Mbps, 500 Mbps, 1 Gig, and 5 Gig. Every tier comes with unlimited data, no annual contract, an included Wi-Fi gateway, and a price-lock guarantee that keeps your rate from increasing after the first year. Check out all plans here.

AT&T Internet Air is a different animal. It uses AT&T’s 5G wireless network instead of a wire, so you set it up yourself by plugging in a gateway; no technician required. That convenience is a major perk, and the speeds are a solid upgrade over DSL, usually landing somewhere between 75 and 300 Mbps depending on your signal. But it cannot match fiber on consistency or lag. Internet Air typically runs 20 to 60 milliseconds of latency, while fiber sits in the single digits to low teens. For streaming and everyday browsing, that gap barely shows. For competitive gaming or heavy video work, fiber wins. Check out Internet Air here

AT&T also offers some great bundling options to help you save money and consolidate your services. You can check out bundling options here

What to Do If Internet Air is the Only Option

If you check your address and fiber isn’t an option, don’t panic. Internet Air is an incredible step up from DSL, and it is the reason AT&T can retire copper without leaving you offline. Self-installation takes minutes, there is no contract, and you get unlimited data.

A smart move is to check availability again every few months. AT&T is building fiber at a rapid pace, and many people start on Internet Air while they wait, then upgrade to fiber the moment it reaches their street. You can switch later without penalty, so treat Internet Air as a strong bridge rather than a dead end. If your work depends on rock-solid uploads and low lag and neither AT&T option fits, it is also worth comparing what other providers offer at your address before you commit. You can do so at compareinternet.com

Don’t Wait for the Shut-Off Notice

Check what is available at your address and line up your replacement before your DSL goes dark. Enter your address here to see whether fiber has reached you, compare plans that fit your household, and make the switch on your own schedule instead of AT&T’s. A few minutes now saves you a scramble later.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is AT&T really discontinuing DSL, or is this just a price change?

It is a full shutdown, not a price change. AT&T stopped selling DSL to new customers in October 2025 and began tearing down copper equipment in June 2026, with a goal of retiring nearly all copper by the end of 2029. Existing DSL customers will be moved to fiber or Internet Air as their area is decommissioned, and notice may come as little as 90 days in advance.

How do I know if AT&T Fiber is available at my house?

Check your specific street address here. Fiber availability can differ block by block, so a neighbor having it does not guarantee you do. AT&T Fiber currently covers about 21 states and is expanding toward 40 million locations by the end of 2026, so it is worth rechecking every few months if it is not there yet.

Which is better for working from home, AT&T Fiber or Internet Air?

Fiber. Its upload speeds match its download speeds, and its latency stays low and steady, which keeps video calls smooth and cloud backups quick. Internet Air works fine for lighter remote work, but its higher lag and variable speeds make fiber the safer pick if your job leans on reliable uploads.
