Can You Move T-Mobile or Verizon 5G Home Internet to a Different Address?

Caroline Lefelhoc / Updated Sep 04, 2026 | Pub. Sep 04, 2026

If you have a T-Mobile or Verizon 5G gateway, you have probably wondered if you can unplug it, toss it in a bag, and set it up somewhere else. Maybe you are moving. Maybe you want internet at the lake house on weekends. Maybe you live in an RV and heard this little box is a cheaper alternative to satellite.

The gateway is portable hardware. It will pull a signal anywhere T-Mobile or Verizon has 5G coverage. The service tied to that gateway is not as portable as you might hope. Both providers state in their residential Terms of Service that the gateway must be used at the address you registered, and using it elsewhere consistently is a violation you can be caught for. T-Mobile, in particular, has moved from politely reminding people to actively tracking gateway locations and shutting down accounts. So the box might work at another location, but using it there is prohibited and could get your account shut down.

Service is locked to the registered address

Fixed wireless home internet runs on the same 5G towers that serve everyone’s phones. Carriers only sell home internet in areas where a tower has spare capacity. When you move that gateway to a tower that is already busy, you are competing with local phone customers, who are the higher-priority moneymakers. That is the entire reason both companies restrict the gateway to a registered address, and it is why they care enough to enforce it.

T-Mobile’s own fine print is blunt: the gateways are for in-home use at the location provided at activation, and service is restricted away from the approved address. Verizon’s terms say the same thing in different words, requiring the service to be used only at the specific service address and requiring the company’s consent to move it. Neither of these is buried in legalese anymore. Both providers now back the language up with action.

What if you are moving?

Good news if you are relocating. Moving your 5G home internet to a new house is the one situation both companies fully support, as long as you do it their way. Simply update the account first; do not just plug the gateway in at the new place and hope for the best.

How to move T-Mobile Home Internet

T-Mobile lets you change your service address at no cost. Here’s how:

  1. Open the T-Life app, go to the Internet Overview page, tap the More tab, and update your Broadband address.
  2. If you would rather talk to a person, call the Home Internet line at 1-855-916-3292 and ask for a change of address.
  3. Once your new address is confirmed as eligible, you can set up the gateway and start using it right away. There is no transfer fee and no new equipment charge for a straightforward move.

Please note that T-Mobile 5G Home Internet is not available everywhere because it depends on tower capacity. If your new address is not eligible, the company cannot switch you over, and this is when many people who are moving discover their old plan will not follow them. Check eligibility before your move date so you are not left scrambling. You can check eligibility and find new internet providers by entering your ZIP code here.

How to move Verizon 5G Home Internet

Verizon runs a similar process through your account.

  1. Sign in to My Verizon, check availability at the new address, and start the service transfer. Verizon recommends you begin at least two weeks before you move so equipment and setup line up with your schedule.
  2. If 5G Home is available at the new address, you may be able to bring your current equipment, so pack the power adapter, cables, and any accessories.
  3. If you are switching between service types, say from LTE Home to 5G Home or over to Fios, Verizon ships new equipment, and you return the old gateway.

Vacation internet solved

If you want a vacation home or weekend setup

One home internet gateway is licensed to one address. The terms do not give you a clean way to bounce a single gateway between your main house and a second property, and the location tracking that flags full-time travelers works the same way on a gateway that spends half its nights at the cabin. Once the data shows the vacation spot as your gateway’s real home, you have turned a home internet plan into something the terms do not allow, and you are exposed to the same throttling and shutoffs described later in this article. So, rather than tell you how to skate the line, here is what to use so you are covered in both places and never have to think about it.

If the vacation home is a place you return to regularly, the right move is to set up a separate home internet line registered at that address. Both T-Mobile and Verizon let you set up 5G Home Internet at a second property as its own account, as long as that address is eligible. Eligibility is the first thing to check because fixed wireless depends on tower capacity. A second line means each gateway lives where it is registered, each one stays fast and compliant, and you never haul equipment back and forth. If you only visit a handful of times a year, a full second line is overkill, and a mobile hotspot plan or your phone’s built-in hotspot is a cleaner fit, since those products are built to travel with you.

Your primary home’s gateway is not a portable device for the second location. This setup is most likely to get flagged, and the fix costs you either your speeds or your whole account. Pick the product that matches how often you are really there, and the problem disappears.

If you want to use it in an RV or while traveling

Using a residential gateway as your full-time internet on the road is a major violation. Both companies restrict home internet to a fixed residential address, and Verizon spells it out for RVers directly: your Verizon Home Internet is linked to a specific address, so you can’t use it on the road in your RV. There is no gray area here. The residential terms weren’t written with travel in mind, and the enforcement systems are built to flag a gateway that keeps waking up in new cities.

The right product for RVers: T-Mobile’s AWAY plan

T-Mobile makes a product designed for travelers and RVers, and it uses the same style of 5G gateway. It is called the AWAY plan, sometimes listed as Home Internet AWAY, and it is built for RVers, seasonal travelers, and digital nomads who need to use the gateway at multiple locations across T-Mobile’s network.

As of 2026, AWAY comes in three tiers, with AutoPay pricing: unlimited data at about $160 a month, 200GB at about $110 a month, and 100GB at about $70 a month, plus a one-time $35 device connection charge. It is self-install, so you go from box to browsing in minutes. Two things to keep in mind. AWAY cannot be bundled with a T-Mobile phone plan the way regular home internet can, so you pay the full standalone price. And it is meant for use in different places as you travel, not for parking in one spot long-term, with no off-network roaming. RV membership clubs sometimes offer a discount, so it is worth checking if you belong to one before you sign up at full price.

Yes, AWAY costs roughly three times what the cheap $50 home internet plan runs, and that sticker shock is real. But it is internet that works and reliably follows the rules versus internet that gets throttled or cut off the first time the system flags your travel pattern.

What Verizon offers travelers

Verizon does not have a direct AWAY equivalent for its 5G Home Internet. If you are a Verizon customer who needs internet on the road, the company points you toward a mobile hotspot plan or a dedicated hotspot device rather than the home gateway. So if RV life is your goal and you want to stay on T-Mobile’s or Verizon’s network, T-Mobile’s AWAY is the purpose-built answer, and Verizon’s is a hotspot, not the home cube.

When 5G home internet no longer fits your life

If you have read this far and realized the address restrictions do not work for how you live, that is useful information, not bad news. It just means you need to match the product to your real situation. If you want a rock-solid connection at your primary home, comparing cable and fiber options at that address will usually get you faster and more stable service than fixed wireless, often for a similar price. If you are an RVer or full-time traveler, weigh T-Mobile’s AWAY plan against other mobile options rather than fighting the home internet terms.

Either way, the fastest way to see what is available where you live or where you are headed is to enter your ZIP code below. You will see the cable, fiber, and fixed wireless plans that serve that specific address side by side, so you can pick the one that actually fits your life instead of forcing a home internet gateway to be something it was never built to be.

Frequently asked questions

Can I take my T-Mobile home internet to another house and just plug it in?

You can physically plug it in anywhere with T-Mobile 5G coverage, but you should not use it that way without updating your account. T-Mobile now tracks gateway location and can throttle, suspend, or terminate accounts used consistently at an unregistered address. If you are moving, change your Broadband address in the T-Life app or call 1-855-916-3292 first. The address change is free, and once your new address is confirmed eligible, you can use the gateway immediately.

What is the difference between T-Mobile Home Internet and the AWAY plan?

They use similar 5G gateway hardware, but the rules and pricing differ. Home Internet is cheaper, roughly $50 to $70 a month depending on the plan, eligible for phone-plan bundling discounts, and it must stay at your registered address. AWAY is built for RVers and travelers, allows use at multiple locations across T-Mobile’s network, and runs about $70 to $160 a month depending on the data tier, plus a $35 device connection charge, and it cannot be bundled with a phone plan. If you travel, AWAY is the plan that keeps you compliant.
