You Probably Have More Internet Options Than You Think in 2026

Sam Watanuki / Updated Sep 25, 2026 | Pub. Sep 25, 2026

If you haven’t shopped for internet in the last two years, there’s a good chance the answer to “how many internet providers are in my area” has changed since you last checked. The mindset of “I’m stuck with the cable company" made sense a decade ago.

In 2026, it’s often just outdated information.

Why It Feels Like You Only Have One Choice

For most of the last two decades, a large share of U.S. households really did have exactly one wired option: the local cable company. If you’ve ever searched “do I have to use my local cable company,” the answer at your address may well have been yes—DSL was too slow to count as real competition, and fiber hadn’t reached your street.

That’s the era of cable monopoly internet service that shaped how a lot of people still shop today. Many renew a cable plan out of habit instead of checking whether alternatives to cable internet have shown up since.

How Many Internet Providers Are Actually in Your Area Right Now?

It depends entirely on your address, but nationally the number of serious alternatives has grown substantially, and having more than one internet provider in your area is now common rather than rare.

As of late 2025, roughly 13.8 million U.S. homes had access to more than one fiber provider alone—a figure that grew about 16% in a single year [1]. That’s on top of homes that can now choose between cable, fiber, 5G home internet, satellite, or a municipal network.

Checking your internet provider options in your area takes about two minutes on the FCC’s National Broadband Map, which lists every provider that has reported service at your specific address.

Is Fiber a Real Alternative to Cable Near You?

Fiber has become the clearest internet alternative to cable for millions of households. Total U.S. fiber passings closed in on 100 million homes by the end of 2025, with fiber now reaching more than 60% of American households [2].

AT&T continues expanding its fiber footprint, while Frontier—now part of Verizon following a January 2026 acquisition—Brightspeed, Fidium, and a wave of regional overbuilders have pushed fiber into markets that had only ever had cable.

If a fiber provider has reached your street, it’s often faster and cheaper than your existing cable plan, which is why it’s worth rechecking availability even if fiber wasn’t an option the last time you looked.

Is 5G Home Internet a Legitimate Alternative to Cable?

Yes, in a growing number of neighborhoods. T-Mobile and Verizon have turned 5G home internet into a genuine 5G home internet alternative to the local cable company, with the two carriers plus AT&T combining for more than 13 million fixed wireless subscribers as of late 2025 [3].  There’s no truck roll or buried line—service runs through a wireless receiver, plans typically carry no annual contract, and pricing tends to undercut cable. The tradeoff is that speeds can dip during peak evening hours in dense areas, so it’s worth taking time to compare internet plans on your address rather than assuming 5G is automatically the better deal.

What About Satellite and Municipal Broadband?

For addresses that fiber and 5G haven’t reached, LEO satellite internet has become a legitimate option rather than a last resort. Starlink now counts roughly 2.7 million U.S. subscribers, enough to rank among the country’s ten largest residential internet providers [4], with most of that growth coming from rural households that previously had only slow DSL or nothing at all.

There’s also another source of competition: municipal broadband. Local governments and public utilities now operate close to 450 community-owned networks across the U.S. [5], up from around 400 just a few years earlier. These local internet providers rarely advertise the way national carriers do, which is exactly why they tend to get missed in a quick search. They show up on the FCC map, but not always in a Google search for “internet near me.”

How Mergers Are Reshaping Competition in 2026

Some of the same companies expanding competition are also consolidating. Verizon closed its acquisition of Frontier in January 2026, adding roughly 30 million fiber passings to its network [6]. Charter and Cox completed their merger this year as well, creating the largest cable operator in the country, with the combined company set to operate under the Spectrum brand [7].

A third deal—GFiber’s merger with Astound Broadband—is still pending and expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2026 [8]. None of this erases the competition cable internet customers are now seeing in most markets, but it’s a reminder that the list of providers at your address is worth rechecking periodically rather than assuming it’s fixed.

How to Compare Internet Providers and Plans at Your Address

The only way to know for certain is to compare internet providers using your actual address, not your neighborhood’s reputation. Start with the FCC’s National Broadband Map, then cross-check pricing and terms directly with each provider that shows up, since advertised internet prices often differ from what’s actually offered at a specific unit or building.

Running a full internet comparison—cable against fiber, 5G, and satellite where available—is the most reliable way to find the best internet providers for your address rather than settling for whichever company mailed you the most flyers.

If you’re looking for the best internet in your area and haven’t checked in a while, treating it as a two-minute task rather than a major project is usually enough to find out whether you’re overpaying, underserved on speed, or both.

FAQs

How do I find out exactly which internet providers serve my address?

Enter your street address into the FCC’s National Broadband Map, which lists every provider that has reported offering service at that specific location, along with the technology type and maximum advertised speed.

Do I have to use my local cable company if it’s the only provider I’ve heard of?

Not necessarily. Cable is often the most heavily advertised option in a market, but fiber, 5G home internet, satellite, or a municipal network may also serve your address even if you haven’t seen ads for them.

Is 5G home internet as reliable as cable or fiber?

It can be for many households, though speeds may dip during peak evening hours in dense areas. It’s generally a stronger fit for typical browsing and streaming than for households with heavy, simultaneous bandwidth needs.

Will the current wave of ISP mergers reduce my options?

Possibly in some markets, since Verizon-Frontier and Charter-Cox have already closed and GFiber-Astound is pending. But mergers mainly consolidate ownership rather than remove infrastructure, so it’s still worth checking what’s physically available at your address.
