How to Set Up Backup Internet So You Never Drop a Work Call

Caroline Lefelhoc / Updated Jul 21, 2026 | Pub. Jul 22, 2026

One thing about working from home is that when your internet goes out, you’re out of commission. Unless…you think of your future self, so you are aptly prepared for this scenario.

Backup internet is your fail-safe that you will thank yourself for if you set it up. A second connection, running on completely separate infrastructure from your primary (costing about $35 to $60 a month), arrives in the mail, installs in about fifteen minutes, and requires no technician and no contract. Backup internet t is the highest-value upgrade you can make to your home office.

So, if you want to be known as the employee who is dependable, hardworking, and never has any internet issues, read on.

[search_block]

The math on backup internet

First, outages are routine, not rare. Cloudflare logged 174 major internet disruptions worldwide in 2025, more than three significant events every week, and that only counts the big ones. It does not count the neighborhood fiber cut, the afternoon your provider does maintenance without telling anyone, or the storm that takes power out on your block. Power failures were the single leading cause of outages in 2025, accounting for roughly 45 percent of incidents, which matters because a power blip long enough to knock out your modem is far more common than a regional outage.

Second, one lost workday can cost more than a year of backup service. A freelancer or consultant billing $50 an hour loses $400 in a single blown day. A backup line at $50 a month costs $600 a year. One outage that eats a full workday nearly pays for the entire year. Small businesses lose an estimated $7,800 per year to internet downtime, while a cellular failover connection runs $50 to $150 a month. It is almost always worth it to have backup internet.

Third, some costs never show up on an invoice. If you are in a performance-managed role, a client-facing role, or job hunting, the downside is not measured in dollars per hour. It is measured in the opportunity you did not get because your internet wasn’t working.

Treat backup internet as insurance with a clear monthly premium. You are not buying more speed. You are buying the guarantee that a problem outside your control never becomes your problem.

Your options for backup internet

The two ways to build a backup internet connection

Understanding the difference between the two backup approaches takes two minutes and saves you from buying the wrong one.

Approach A: a second home internet connection

This is a separate service from a separate provider, running in parallel with your primary, all the time. Usually the options are T-Mobile 5G Home Internet or Verizon 5G Home Internet sitting as a backup to cable or fiber.

Infrastructure diversity is why this works so well. For example, your cable line runs through coax in the ground to a local node. Your 5G connection runs through the air to a cell tower on a different power grid and a different backbone. When your cable provider has a regional outage, the cellular network keeps humming. The two failure modes almost never overlap, which is the entire point.

To make the handoff automatic, you can add a dual-WAN router. This is a single box with two internet input ports. You plug your primary connection into one and the backup into the other. The router monitors both and switches traffic to the backup within seconds of the primary failing, without you touching anything and without your devices reconnecting to a different WiFi network.

This is the approach that works best for the large majority of work-from-home professionals.

Approach B: your phone’s mobile hotspot

Cheaper, because you probably already have it, but its less effective as a daily failover.

The core problem is throttling. Most phone plans give you a fixed bucket of high-speed hotspot data, and a full day of video calls will chew through it faster than you expect. Once you exhaust the bucket, carriers throttle hard. T-Mobile drops hotspot speeds to roughly 600 Kbps, which turns a Zoom call into a slideshow (the most embarrassing video call of your life). Verizon is more forgiving, throttling to about 6 Mbps after its high-speed allowance, which stays usable for a call in a pinch.

The other problems with this setup are practical. Your phone becomes a router, so its battery drains and you cannot take it out of the room. Every device in your house has to be manually reconnected to the hotspot network and then manually switched back.

A hotspot is better as an emergency fallback or as a third layer behind a real backup line. Do not build your work-from-home reliability plan on it.

What to buy

Best overall backup: T-Mobile 5G Home Internet

T-Mobile sells three 5G home tiers: Rely, Amplified, and All-In. Standalone pricing lands roughly in the $50 to $80 range depending on tier and current promotion, and drops to about $35 a month for the base plan if you bundle it with a T-Mobile voice line. Real-world speeds run somewhere between 130 and 415 Mbps, with plenty of users reporting the high end. That is far more than a video call needs, and enough for large file transfers.

Three things make it the default pick for backup duty.

  1. There is no contract, so you can cancel if it underperforms.
  2. The gateway ships in a day or two and self-installs, so no appointment and no technician in your house.
  3. The five-year price guarantee means the money you budget for backup today is the money you spend on it in 2031, with taxes and fees excluded from that promise.

Two caveats.

  1. Coverage varies by address, and inside the house it varies by room, so plan on positioning the gateway near a window. The T-Mobile app shows live signal strength to help you find the best spot.
  2. T-Mobile uses carrier-grade NAT, meaning you do not get a public IPv4 address. Cloud-based work tools and standard corporate VPN clients are unaffected. If your job requires inbound connections to your home network, port forwarding, or self-hosted remote access, test that before you cancel anything.

Use the free trial. Fifteen days is enough to run a real workweek on it.

Best backup for heavy VPN and corporate users: Verizon 5G Home Internet

Verizon sells 5G Home, 5G Home Plus, and 5G Home Ultimate, with standalone list pricing in the $60 to $85 range and bundled pricing starting around $35 a month with a qualifying Verizon phone line. Price locks run three years on the base plan, four on Plus, and five on Ultimate.

Where Verizon pulls ahead is on its 5G Ultra Wideband network, which delivers faster speeds in the areas that have it, with the Ultimate tier reaching up to 1,000 Mbps (yes, a full gig!). Some corporate VPN configurations also behave a little better on Verizon’s network. The trade-off is footprint: Verizon 5G Home Internet is available in more than 900 cities but reaches fewer addresses than T-Mobile’s fixed wireless coverage. Check availability first, then decide.

Best backup for rural work-from-home professionals: Starlink

If neither T-Mobile nor Verizon reaches your address, Starlink is your best buddy. SpaceX restructured residential pricing in January 2026 into three tiers, then raised most plans by $5 to $10 in the spring. Current pricing lands around $55 a month for Residential 100, roughly $85 for Residential 200, and about $130 for Residential Max. The Standard kit costs $349 outright, or you can rent it for $10 a month, which is the smarter move while you are still deciding.

Two warnings.

  1. The CGNAT limitation is more serious here, because Starlink residential customers cannot get a public IPv4 address at all. If your employer’s VPN requires one, verify compatibility before you commit.
  2. Some high-demand regions carry a one-time congestion surcharge that can run from $100 to well over $1,000, which will show up at checkout when you enter your address. Do not budget from the advertised price alone.

Starlink also offers a 30-day return window on hardware.

The zero-cost check: the hotspot you already pay for

Before you spend anything, open your carrier app and find out how much high-speed hotspot data your current plan includes. If you are on a premium plan with a large allowance, you already own a decent emergency backup. That may be enough if outages in your area are rare and short. It is not enough if your income depends on being reachable, because it still requires you to notice the outage and act.

Check What Internet Backup Options are Available Near You

Enter your zip code below to check if T-Mobile or Verizon 5G Home Internet is available at your address. That is your backup line, and street-level availability is the only thing that determines whether the recommended approach works for you.

Then check what else is available at your address. If fiber is an option, upgrading your primary connection is worth doing alongside adding the backup. A more reliable primary means fewer failovers.

Frequently asked questions

Will my video call stay connected when the failover happens?

With a dual-WAN router, usually yes. Most consumer models complete the switch in a few seconds to half a minute. Zoom, Teams, and Google Meet all tolerate brief network interruptions and will reconnect on their own, so the typical experience is a short freeze rather than a dropped call. Without a dual-WAN router, no. You will have to manually switch your devices to the backup network, which means the call drops while you do it. If seamless handoff matters to you, the router is not optional.

Can I use 5G home internet as a backup if I have a corporate VPN?

Most likely, yes. Standard corporate VPN clients like Cisco AnyConnect, GlobalProtect, and Zscaler connect outbound and work normally over T-Mobile and Verizon 5G home internet. The limitation is CGNAT, which means no public IPv4 address and no inbound port forwarding. That breaks self-hosted remote desktop setups and certain site-to-site configurations. Test your specific VPN during the trial window, and if your IT department has strong opinions about it, ask them before you order.

Is it cheaper to just buy a bigger phone plan with more hotspot data?

Sometimes, but it solves a different problem. Upgrading to a plan with 200 to 250 GB of hotspot data typically costs $90 to $105 a month, which is more than a dedicated 5G home line. You also still have the manual-switching problem, the battery problem, and the throttle waiting at the end of the bucket. If you only need occasional emergency connectivity and you were considering a plan upgrade anyway, the hotspot route is reasonable. If you want something that works automatically while you are in a meeting, buy the dedicated line.
