Best Unlimited Hotspot Plans 2026: Mobile WiFi Without Throttling

Sam Watanuki / Updated May 10, 2026 | Pub. May 11, 2026

If you’ve searched for a “hotspot without throttling," you’ve probably already run into the fine print. But what is an unlimited hotspot plan, really? Because truly unlimited, full-speed hotspot data is rare. Most plans marketed as unlimited hotspot plans actually cap your high-speed data (typically between 15GB and 150GB per month) and then throttle your connection to 2G or 3G speeds for the rest of the billing cycle.

That distinction matters enormously. Streaming a single HD movie uses roughly 2–4GB. A typical video call in HD burns through about 2GB per hour. If your “unlimited" plan caps out at 15GB of fast data, you could hit that ceiling in just a few days of regular use.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) requires carriers to disclose throttling practices in their plan terms [1], but those disclosures are often buried. Before signing up for any unlimited data hotspot, check for two numbers: (1) how much premium data you get before speeds drop, and (2) what speed you’re throttled to afterward.

How the Hotspot Market Has Changed

The portable hotspot plans available in 2026 look very different from what existed even three or four years ago. Until around 2022, the market was dominated by dedicated hockey-puck-style hotspot devices running on 4G LTE, with plans sold separately through major carriers like AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile.

Three things have since reshaped the category:

  • The 5G buildout. T-Mobile’s nationwide 5G network, now the largest in the U.S. according to Ookla’s 2024 Speedtest Market Report [2], made it viable to offer home-grade speeds from a mobile device. This opened the door to products like T-Mobile AWAY, which blur the line between a mobile hotspot and a portable home router.
  • Low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite expansion. Starlink’s Roam service brought satellite-based unlimited WiFi hotspot coverage to locations where cell networks simply don’t reach, a great alternative for rural users, RV travelers, and outdoor workers.
  • MVNO growth. Mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs)—companies that resell capacity on major networks [3]—have made budget-friendly unlimited hotspot options more accessible. Carriers like Visible (which runs on Verizon’s network) now offer full unlimited data hotspot plans starting around $45/month.

Best Unlimited Hotspot Plans Compared

Provider Plan Price High-Speed Data Best For
T-Mobile [4, 5] AWAY Unlimited $160/mo. Truly unlimited 5G Groups, RV travel, heavy users
Starlink [6] Roam Unlimited $165/mo. + equipment Truly unlimited (satellite) Rural areas, outdoor use
Visible [7, 8] Visible+ Pro $45/mo. Unlimited at max 15Mbps Solo users, budget-conscious
Verizon [9, 10] Prepaid 150GB $70/mo. 150GB then throttled Moderate multi-device use
AT&T [11] DataConnect 100GB $90/mo. 100GB then throttled Domestic use, add-on purchases
T-Mobile [12] Hotspot 50GB $50/mo. 50GB then throttled Light-to-moderate single user
Straight Talk [13] 100GB Hotspot $50/mo. 100GB then throttled Budget, U.S.-only coverage

Prices as of May 2026. Availability and offers vary by location and may change.

T-Mobile AWAY Unlimited — Best for Groups and Heavy Users

At $160/month with equipment included, T-Mobile AWAY is the best unlimited hotspot plan for anyone who needs consistent, high-capacity connectivity across multiple devices. It supports up to 64 simultaneous connections on T-Mobile’s nationwide 5G network, works indoors or outdoors with a cell signal, and ships free to your door. There’s no battery backup, so you’ll need a power source or power bank.

It’s well-suited to business travelers, student groups, and road-trippers, handling HD video calls and live-streamed content reliably in testing. It’s hard to justify for solo users who mostly check email and browse.

Starlink Roam — Best for Rural and Off-Grid Use

Starlink Roam delivers genuinely unlimited satellite internet anywhere you have a clear view of the sky. At $165/month plus equipment (starting at $349 for the standard dish, $499 new for the Starlink Mini), it’s the only portable hotspot plan that works equally well in rural Wyoming and a national park campground. It delivers a Wi-Fi 6 network spanning about 600 feet with support for up to 235 devices, capable of 4K live sports streaming in ideal conditions. Drawbacks include bulk, external power requirements, and upfront equipment cost. Some U.S. areas are on waitlist status, so check Starlink’s website before ordering.

Visible+ Pro — Best Budget Unlimited Hotspot

If your priority is an unlimited data hotspot at the lowest possible price, Visible+ Pro at $45/month is hard to beat. It runs on Verizon’s network and gives you unlimited mobile hotspot data, but caps speeds at 15Mbps, and only on one tethered device at a time.

That’s slower than you might like, but 15Mbps is enough for SD video streaming, video calls, email, and light browsing. It’s the best mobile hotspot plan for a solo user who moves around frequently and doesn’t want to track data usage. It’s not suitable for groups, and it won’t support gaming or 4K streaming reliably.

Dedicated Hotspot Device Plans — For Existing Device Owners

If you already own a hotspot device or need a data-only plan, traditional carrier plans remain a solid option. Verizon’s 150GB prepaid plan ($70/month) offers the most data and 4G/5G access, though speeds drop to 3G once you exceed the threshold. AT&T DataConnect 100GB ($90/month) is comparable but doesn’t work internationally. Straight Talk’s 100GB plan ($50/month) undercuts both on price if you can use their network coverage.

Which Plan Is Right for You?

Your best unlimited hotspot plan depends on three factors: how much data you actually need, how many devices you’re connecting, and whether you’re in a cellular coverage area.

  • Heavy users or groups: T-Mobile AWAY Unlimited
  • Rural or off-grid connectivity: Starlink Roam
  • Solo users on a budget: Visible+ Pro
  • Moderate users with an existing hotspot device: Verizon 150GB or Straight Talk 100GB

If you’re still unsure, use the zip code tool below to compare internet providers in your area. You may find that a home broadband plan is a better fit than any portable hotspot plan.

phone and watch stand showing hotspot

What About Using a Hotspot for Home Internet?

It’s possible, but generally not recommended as a primary solution. Hotspot plans are significantly more expensive per gigabyte than broadband plans from internet providers, and most can’t handle typical home usage. The average U.S. household consumed around 600GB per month in 2024, according to OpenVault’s Broadband Insights Report [14].

That said, in rural areas without cable or fiber access, a plan like T-Mobile AWAY or Starlink Roam can serve as a legitimate best hotspot for home internet. Use our zip code tool to compare internet plans and internet prices from local internet providers. A home broadband plan almost always delivers more data, faster speeds, and lower cost.

FAQs

Is there a truly unlimited hotspot plan with no throttling?

Very few. Visible+ Pro offers genuinely unlimited data at max 15Mbps—no hard data cap, but the speed ceiling is the trade-off. T-Mobile AWAY and Starlink Roam also deliver truly unlimited data without a hard cutoff, but at a much higher price point. Most other plans, including those from Verizon, AT&T, and Straight Talk, throttle speeds significantly after you reach a monthly high-speed data threshold (typically 50–150GB).

How much hotspot data do I actually need per month?

It depends heavily on how you use it. Light users (email, social media, occasional video calls) can get by on 15–30GB per month. Moderate users who stream video or work remotely regularly may need 50–100GB. Heavy users—those who stream in HD, game online, or share their connection with multiple people—should look for a plan with 150GB or more of premium data, or consider a truly unlimited option like T-Mobile AWAY.

Can I use a hotspot to replace my home internet?

In most cases, no—it’s more expensive and more data-limited than a standard broadband plan. However, for rural households without access to cable or fiber, a high-capacity hotspot plan or fixed wireless option can be a practical alternative. Use our internet comparison tool to see what best internet providers are available in your area before committing to a hotspot as your primary connection.

What’s the difference between a hotspot plan and a phone’s personal hotspot?

A dedicated hotspot plan provides data to a standalone hotspot device (or the T-Mobile AWAY gateway), while a phone’s personal hotspot shares your smartphone’s cellular data with other devices. Most postpaid phone plans from T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon include a set amount of hotspot data (typically 15–150GB) as part of the plan. Once you’ve used that allotment, hotspot speeds are throttled even if  you still have unlimited data for calls and browsing on the phone itself.
